Is there anything sweeter than a fresh-on-this-Earth baby? (If so, don't tell me.) I am so incredibly honored that you have chosen me to document such a precious, and fleeting, moment in your family's time.
Before your session...
My newborn sessions are defined as "lifestyle." I am not huge on props- I prefer the simplistic beauty that only a newborn has. They're so sweet all on their own & I don't believe they need a bunch of crazy hats and unnatural posing. (Although, if you'd like to include a meaningful item I will certainly accommodate that.) If you are looking for the "posed" newborn type of photography, I am not your girl. But if you want a more natural and authentic approach to truly capture this incredible season of life, I would love nothing more.
Once you've contacted me about photographing your newborn, we can set up a tentative date based around your due date. Because babies typcially come on their own time, however, once you have delivered you can then contact me to set up the actual session. I prefer to photograph newborns within the first two weeks of their life, but don't worry if you wait until closer to 1 month- I've done those, too!
I allot 1-2 hours for all of my newborn sessions. We need plenty of fuss, snack, and bathroom breaks! Feel free to take breaks yourself (not just for baby.) I want you guys to be comfortable and feeling great. I typically try to schedule newborn sessions in the morning or early afternoon, which is great because most babies tend to be sleepier at this time of day anyway. Please don't stress if we have to take lots of breaks or if baby isn't "cooperating." Trust me, I am used to it. My number one goal (besides getting great pictures) is following baby's rhythm and ensuring their comfort. I don't want you getting upset or stressed if things aren't going as smoothly as you had hoped. I am so flexible and go-with-the-flow. We will make it work, I promise. :)
Babies are best photographed on a nice full tummy, so shortly before I am set to arrive (~30 minutes) please feed your baby. It is okay if you are still in the process of feeding when I arrive, as I have things to bring in and set up as well. It usually takes me about 15 minutes to scout out some good spots in your home, set up, and get my settings correct before we begin, so no worries if you aren't ready when I get there!
I prefer to photograph newborns in simple, or very little clothing. I don't suggest a frilly, complicated outfit for the shoot. I love newborns in plain, long sleeved onesies (white or a neutral color is preferred), and simple swaddle blankets. I will bring a few swaddles, wraps & blankets, and if you have some that are meaningful I welcome using those! For baby girls, I know the temptation is strong to put them in some cute headbands, haha. I actually like very simple, small & dainty headbands on sweet little girls. But please try not to use a hot pink zebra-striped headband with a neon flower the size of her little head. I think you understand what I mean. ;) I have a few small headbands I will bring for your little one to wear, if you so choose.
For mama & daddy (or any siblings that are going to be in any shots) I suggest wearing simple, light, and comfortable clothes. I am a big fan of neutrals and pastels, although I certainly don't discourage bold colors. Avoid lettering on shirts, mixing too many patterns (i.e. plaid, stripes, polka dots etc.) and being match. Mamas- wear what you feel most comfortable & beautiful in- layers are always a plus if you're adjusting to your body postpartum. Kimonos, pretty robes, slouchy cardigan sweaters layered over a tank look great. Also, a tip for mama- your hands will probably be shown in some pictures, so make sure your nails are how you'd like them to look. Oh, and I love bare feet for family members!
I ask that you have your house warmer than usual for our session (75-80 degrees is usually great.) Try to get the heat cranked up (or a space heater running) about an hour prior to my arrival. A warm, toasty baby is a happy baby!
During your session...
When I arrive at your home I will search for the spots with the most interesting light and visual appeal. While I typically try to find the brightest area to shoot the majority of our session in, I love finding little pockets of light in your home, or places that would make for an interesting composition.
Please have all of the rooms that we will be using (most likely the nursery, parent's bedroom, and the living room) tidy and clutter-free. That's not to say you have to go on a cleaning spree...who has time for that with a newborn?! Just straighten up as you would if company were coming over. Don't worry if you don't have a Pinterest-perfect house. It's my job to make it work, whatever the circumstances. I am constantly rearranging and moving items out of the way during sessions! A trick is to look at a particular room with fresh eyes and ask yourself which items you'd want included in a photo taken in that room. The rest should be out of the way.
After your session...
When I arrive home I go through all the photos from the session and pick the best of the best to edit and share. Depending on how the session went the number of images can vary from 30 to 100.
After editing a few images I will post a sneak peek on my Facebook page, usually 3-6 images. The rest of the images will be posted on my website blog within 14 business days.
All of your edited images will be presented to you via an online gallery in which you can download them at your convenience, as well as order prints.
I will provde you with a printing release so that you may get your photos printed at the lab of your choice. Though I also offer the sale of prints and products to make it easier for you, as the client, when choosing what products and sizes you would like. All prints and products purchased through me are printed at a high-quality professional lab.
WHAT TO EXPECT AFTER
We had the best time together, right? :) In the days following our session, you can expect to see some "sneak peeks" on Facebook- feel free to tag/share! I am always so flattered when clients use my photos on social media, I just ask that you give me a tag to help spread the word. Your full gallery will be ready within two weeks of the session, and I will email you the link for access. The download process is simple, but if you have any issues please don't hesitate to contact me. Although you'll receive a print release, you are able to order professional grade prints through your gallery. I cannot stress enough that is does matter where you get your photos printed! www.mpix.com is a more affordable alternative, and is available to the public. I am passionate about getting your photos off of your computer and onto your walls- beautiful canvas wraps, high-quality photo books, and premium prints are all amazing ways to preserve your memories for years to come. Your great-grandchildren won't be holding a hard drive, they'll be holding an actual photograph of you.
Full payment (cash, check, or card) is due at the time of the session.
